Officials in S.E. Oregon and Treasure Valley meet to Discuss Gang Prosecution
During the May 23rd meeting of the Treasure Valley Partnership, officials from throughout the area met to discuss gang related crimes and their prosecution. The meeting was hosted by the U.S. Attorney for Idaho and included a video conference with the Oregon U.S. Attorney’s Office’s in both Portland and Eugene.
The Treasure Valley Partnership is a coalition of Mayors and County Commissioners in the Treasure Valley, Idaho. Since 2007, the Partnership along with the State of Idaho has funded a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney (SAUSA) for the purpose of federally prosecuting gang related crimes in the Treasure Valley. This SAUSA Program has proven to be very successful. Since its inception, the project has indicted 166 individuals. So far, 127 people have been sentenced to a combined total of 479 years in federal prison.
On behalf of the Treasure Valley Partnership members, the SAUSA Program has worked in concert with local law enforcement and together they have had a dramatic effect on reducing gang related crimes in the valley. For example, gang related drive-by shootings have dropped from 78 in Caldwell in 2006, to just one in 2010.
In addition to reducing gang related crimes in the valley, this SAUSA Program has also created major savings for Idaho taxpayers. The individuals sentenced federally are doing their time in federal penitentiaries, not in Idaho correctional institutions. The State of Idaho tax savings are hard to quantify, however, the 479 years of total sentences handed down to these criminals would cost Idaho taxpayers a minimum of nearly $10 million if they were in the Idaho prisons.
Because gang related criminal activity knows no borders, officials in S.E. Oregon and Idaho are working together to address this issue. Malheur County District Attorney Dan Norris, Ontario Oregon Interim Chief of Police Mark Alexander, Amanda Anderson from the Malheur County Drug Free Communities Coalition, Tom Elzondo – Ontario Police Department Gang Enforcement Officer and Ontario Mayor Joe Dominick attended the meeting of the Partnership.
This Cross-Border cooperation on federal, state, county and city levels is a good thing for the citizens of our communities. The communication and cooperation forged during such exchanges will go along way toward the reduction and elimination of gang related criminal activity in our valley.
